Starting and Exiting Safe Mode

By: BriskieL

The first step in starting your computer or re-booting in Safe Mode, is knowing which Operating System you have. Right click the 'my computer' icon on your desktop, then click properties, then General tab. example below. Using the computer in safe mode allows you to turn off unnecessary programs so you can find the cause of problems. On your System Properties, look to the right under System: you will find which OS you are running. Safe Mode comes with Windows 98/Me/2000/XP. If you have one of those OS, you can run Safe Mode.

Once you know which OS you have, use the correct info below according to your OS. Remove all (floppy or CD's) from their drives before restarting.

Windows 98/ME

For Windows 98/Me: Restart the computer. As the computer restarts, press and hold down the F8 key until the Windows 98/Me StartUp Menu appears. (keyboard example below). When it appears, select Safe Mode and press Enter. The StartUp Menu on your desktop will be dark with plain text. Windows will start in Safe Mode, it could take a few minutes.

Windows 2000

For Windows 2000, the F8 key is the only way to get into Safe Mode. Restart the computer. When you see the black-and-white Starting Windows Bar at the bottom of the screen, start tapping the F8 key. (Keyboard example below). In the Windows 2000 Advanced Options Menu, select Safe Mode if it is not selected. If it is not selected, use the arrow keys (on keyboard) to select it. Press Enter. Windows starts in Safe Mode, it could take a few minutes.

Windows XP

For re-starting or re-booting in Safe Mode for Windows XP users: Restart the computer. Some computers have a progress bar that refers to the Word BIOS. Others may not let you know what is happening. As soon as the BIOS loads, begin tapping the F8 key (keyboard example above). Do so until the Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. If this happens, restart the computer and try again. Using the arrow keys on the keyboard (keyboard example above), select Safe Mode and press Enter. Screen example below shows what Windows Advanced Options Menu will look like.

All

After selecting Safe Mode, and Enter, another prompt may show up telling you Windows is running in safe mode, and gives the option to check to continue. Continue = Yes. (prompt example below).

For all Windows OS, upon running your computers in Safe Mode, note that some programs will not work entirely, you will NOT have access to the Internet, and the Icons for all programs, folders and files will appear much larger. To know you have re-started your computer in Safe Mode correctly, all four corners of your screen will have the Safe Mode indication. Your system tray will only show the time.

To restart your computer back in regular mode, just simply re-start your computer.
